AEO vs SEO: What Changes When AI Answers the Query

Published 2026-07-08 · 7 min read · by the isaeo team

In short

SEO optimises for ranking in a list of links. AEO — answer-engine optimization — optimises for being quoted inside an AI-generated answer. The mechanics differ: AEO rewards structured data, question-shaped headings and short self-contained passages an engine can lift without rewriting.

What is AEO?

Answer-engine optimization is the practice of making a page easy for an AI system — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Bing Copilot — to read, trust and quote. The unit of success is not position #3. It's whether your sentence appears in the answer, with your domain named as the source.

That distinction matters because the two goals pull on different levers. A page can rank well and still be near-useless to an answer engine: long preamble, no structured data, claims buried in the tenth paragraph. We see this constantly in real audits — see the site that scored 83 for SEO and 13 for AEO.

How AEO and SEO differ

RewardsDepth and coverageExtractability
Measured byPosition, clicksCitations, brand mentions

Note what is not in that table: a conflict. AEO is not a replacement for SEO. An answer engine still has to find the page, and it mostly finds pages the same way search does. AEO is a layer on top — the work that decides whether being found turns into being quoted.

What answer engines actually cite

Across the pages we score highest for AEO, the same handful of traits recur:

What to change first

In rough order of payoff per hour spent:

  1. Add a 40-60 word direct answer under your main heading on your top 20 pages.
  2. Rewrite section headings as the questions people actually type.
  3. Add FAQPage schema to pages that already answer questions.
  4. Check you aren't blocking AI crawlers by accident — a robots.txt line can undo all of the above.
  5. Publish an llms.txt if you want to signal which content matters.

How to measure AEO

This is the awkward part: there's no Search Console for citations yet. What you can measure is readiness — whether a page has the traits cited pages share. That's what isaeo's AEO score does: it grades every crawled page on structured data, question headings, lead-passage quality, lists and tables, then rolls those into a site-level score alongside the classic SEO health score.

Scoring both together is the point. Fixing AEO on a page that's broken for SEO is decorating a house with no roof.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises a page to rank in a list of search results. AEO optimises it to be quoted inside an AI-generated answer. SEO is measured by position and clicks; AEO by citations and brand mentions. AEO rewards structured data, question-shaped headings and short self-contained passages.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Answer engines still discover pages largely the way search engines do, so technical SEO and crawlability remain prerequisites. AEO is an additional layer that decides whether a discoverable page actually gets quoted.

How do I measure AEO?

There is no citation dashboard yet, so measure readiness instead: whether pages have structured data, question headings, a quotable lead passage and scannable structure. isaeo scores each of these and produces a 0-100 AEO score per page and site.
